Mr. LeRoy Welch

Kennedy Middle College shows what can happen when you mix dynamic educational opportunities with great students and a passionate, skilled faculty. It's a terrific place for both the students and staff.

It seems that every time I tell someone that I'm an administrator at Kennedy Middle College, I have to explain what a middle college is. As soon as I explain the concept - that we are a high school on the Norco College (NC) campus, that our students can take college courses, that they can explore any of the curricular areas available at the community college, that they have the potential to graduate from high school with an Associate's degree or having completed their general education requirements for four year universities - I inevitably get the same responses. From adults, the response is "I wish that had been available when I was in high school." From students, it's wide eyed interest (particularly after they find out that yes, we have clubs, dances and a Prom). The concept is not new, but it is revolutionary, and basically it boils down to this: allow students to pursue their futures while eliminating as much red tape as possible.

I believe wholeheartedly in the mission of this school, and I feel privileged to be able to work here. When I arrive in the morning, I see teenagers who want to be at school. Walking the halls during the day, students say hello or stop me to talk (not a typical experience for an assistant principal!) The classes are dynamic, with teachers who strive to present engaging, informative lessons, and students who have a genuine interest for what they are learning. At any point during the day, students are coming from NC or going to their college classes, and their excitement is infectious.

Our students are great. They show maturity when it comes to classroom behavior or showing their respect for the facility, but they're still kids and have the enthusiasm of high school students. Being an administrator here means building relationships with the students where I am viewed as another parent. It's not unusual to have students come in for academic help, or because they have a few minutes before their next class begins.

In short, Kennedy Middle College is a great place for students and staff. This is my 21st year as an educator at the high school level, and I can say that Kennedy is the best educational model I have experienced.

My job includes the usual duties of a high school assistant principal, so I am the contact person for student conflict issues, attendance concerns, etc. If you need help, send me an email at [email protected] or call me at (951) 738-2200.
