Celebrating AAPI Month: Meet Faoa, 2024-25 Student Board Member
Introducing the 2024-25 CNUSD Student Board Member, Faoaaai (Faoa) Ausage Gatoloai, from Centennial High School! Faoa is excited to represent the student body and eagerly steps into this role, ready to make a positive impact within the greater Corona-Norco Unified School District.
Faoa is dedicated to representing and advocating for students. Her goal is clear: to perform her duties with excellence, ultimately benefiting the students across the District.
“My inspiration [to become a Student Board Member] has stemmed from my passion for wanting to make a positive impact within my community,” said Faoa. “To ensure the voices of my fellow students are heard throughout the District and are kept in mind during discussions and decisions pertaining to the Board.”
Beyond her role as a Student Board Member, she is involved in various clubs and activities at Centennial High School including ASB, the Polynesian Club, and various others.
“A club I especially enjoy is DAWG Pound, which aims to celebrate all athletes and sports on campus,” said Faoa.
In addition, she is a track and field athlete participating in the throw events of shot put and discus.
Outside of the school setting, Faoa serves on the Corona-Norco United Way’s Youth Board, a group of young philanthropists who aim to foster personal self-discovery while providing a light to the Corona-Norco community.
Faoa draws her inspiration for such high achievement from a powerful phrase by Michele Ruiz, “If people are doubting how far you can go, go so far that you can't hear them anymore.”
“Years ago, I came across this quote, and it instantly stuck with me,” said Faoa. “It repeatedly prompts me to reflect on how far I have come and celebrate my accomplishments while motivating me to trailblaze my future.”
Looking ahead, Faoa envisions a career in medicine, with a focus on pediatric care. She plans to pursue a pre-med track at a four-year university, followed by an 18-month mission as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Her aspiration to become a primary care doctor stems from a lifelong passion for helping others.
“I have always found fulfillment in helping others,” said Faoa “Unlike most children, visiting the doctor was the highlight of my day, rather than something to dread.“I witnessed firsthand how the care pediatricians provide for their patients can ensure their well-being. I aim to follow suit and provide others with that same sense of relief.”
Reflecting on her high school experience, Faoa encourages her younger peers to embrace challenges, explore their interests, and seize every opportunity for growth and self-discovery.
“High school is what you make it! So I would advise my younger peers to challenge themselves during this time and make the most of it,” said Faoa, “Join clubs, take classes that may seem daunting, and keep an open mind! In reality, it is through overcoming difficult situations and leaving our comfort zone that we experience true growth.”
As May marks Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Faoa emphasizes the importance of celebrating diversity and honoring the cultural richness of the AANHPI community.
“As a Pacific Islander, my culture is important to me and makes me the person I am today,” said Faoa. “I am certain the AANHPI community would agree as well, as this celebration promotes an inclusive appreciation for AANHPI demographic in our District”
With a steadfast commitment to advocacy, community, and personal growth, Faoa embodies the spirit of leadership and service that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on her peers and community.
“I am beyond excited and honored to take part in this role,” said Faoa. “The warm welcome I have experienced has been deeply appreciated, and I look forward to working with this wonderful Board!”
